Surviving R. Kelly: the R&B Artist and the Monster He Became

Written by Alberta Parish

Surviving R. Kelly is a documentary series that aired on Lifetime this week detailing the childhood and stardom of R. Kelly as well as the many allegations of sexual abuse and misconduct by the R&B singer against young teenage girls and younger women. This documentary shows the pattern of a sexual predator who has used his celebrity to lure teenage girls to his home and studio where he would ask them and sometimes made them perform sexual acts of sodomy with objects on him.

R. Kelly was a victim of sexual abuse beginning at the age of seven. According to his younger brother, Carey Kelly, they were both sexually, verbally, and psychologically abused by their older sister Theresa. R. Kelly also stated in an interview that he was sexually abused by both male and female family members.

It is well-known throughout the music industry that as early as the 1990's, R. Kelly was seen carrying on sexual relationships with young teenage girls. R. Kelly was seen driving around his old high school to pick up teenage girls when he was in his early 20s.

R. Kelly had an inappropriate sexual relationship with musical talent Aaliyah who was 15 at the time. But he'd already known Aaliyah since the age of twelve. According to witnesses, Aaliyah became pregnant by R. Kelly, and the two ran off to secretly marry. However, the marriage was annulled because Aaliyah was 15 at the time of the marriage certificate that listed her as 18 years of age.

Eight women have given candid interviews on their relationships with R. Kelly. They all allege that R. Kelly physically, mentally, sexually, and verbally abused them. Currently, there are accusations against R. Kelly that he is holding young women in his homes in Atlanta and Chicago in some sort of sex cult. The family of Joycelyn Savage has been trying to rescue their daughter from R. Kelly since 2015. Joycelyn Savage left her college dorm here in Atlanta and ran off with the R&B singer. The parents have had minimal contact with their daughter, and have gone to the FBI and other law enforcement officials for help.

Many people claim the parents of Joycelyn Savage sold their daughter to R. Kelly for fame and fortune. However, they tell a different story. According to the parents, their daughter was supposed to be dealing with Sony Records and R. Kelly was supposed to be a third party. He was supposed to be producing a couple of songs with Joycelyn Savage. But it turns out that it was all a lie. R. Kelly lured this young girl to run away with him, and be with him.

Many feel that because the victims are Black girls, law enforcement officials have been slow to act or bring the appropriate charges against R. Kelly. He was charged with child pornography in 2008 but was later found not guilty due to the jurors not being able to determine if the young girl in the video in which R. Kelly was clearly seen urinating upon was indeed a minor. This young girl was R&B singer Sparkle's 14-year-old niece. R. Kelly was never charged with child rape, sexual assault, or molestation against a minor or underaged person.

R. Kelly grew up in the church and knows the way of the Lord. But demons have taken complete control of R. Kelly.  He is no longer the person that grew up in the church those many years ago. He is another entity. He is a man possessed by multiple demons. And unless R. Kelly repent and turn back to the Most High, he is going to find himself in a quick downward spiral to destruction.

I think when many people enter Hell, they blame everybody except themselves. They blame family. They blame friends. They even blame Christians for not telling them the truth about Hell. But I'm here to tell you that Hell is real and many of you are going there unless you repent. The ancients had written many stories of the Underworld, of demons, of gods, of monsters that were in the Underworld. These stories aren't just mythological tales. Hell is actually a real place, and it is in the heart of the earth. Hell was not created for us. It was created to trap or imprison fallen angels.

Stories of sexual misconduct and abuse by powerful men in the entertainment world such as Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey have been the headlines for much of 2018. Now, all of a sudden, R. Kelly has become the new face of sexual predation beginning in 2019. I thought they already made Bill Cosby the face of sexual predation following his criminal conviction. Are we no longer concerned about the Harvey Weinsteins and Kevin Spaceys of the world? What of their crimes? Is the D.A. going to continue pursuing a prosecution case against Weinstein? Has Spacey been charged with anything?

The timing of the airing of R. Kelly's dirty secrets cannot be a coincidence, especially since Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey are being probed by D.A. officials for sexual misconduct and abuse after being exposed by members of the #MeToo movement. This whole mass media frenzy surrounding R. Kelly is definitely a planned and strategic move because mainstream media is a very good brainwashing tool. They know most people's attention span is very short. They know most people do not remember headlines from a year ago. They know how to take the focus off one particular group or person and focus on another.

Surviving R. Kelly needed to be aired to help current victims of R. Kelly.  No predator should be protected. Whatever is done in the dark will come to the light. No evil deed goes unpunished by the Most High. There will be a day of reckoning. Will you enter the Kingdom of Heaven or enter eternal damnation in Hell? "Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it" (Matthew 7:13-14).
